Description: There is furious debate in the medical
fraternity about the benefits of fluoride
Dangers of Fluoride Overuse
Introduction
Fluoride is a chemical compound often used, in topical and
systemic fluoride therapy, for preventing tooth decay. It is actively used for
fluoridation of water and found in many oral hygiene products. The commonly
used additives in the United States of America (USA) include hexafluorosilicic
acid (H2SiF6) and sodium hexafluorosilicate (Na2SiF6) apart from sodium
fluoride (NaF).
Fluoride is commonly found in many products such as certain
mouthwashes, toothpastes, vitamins, etching cream and roach powders. Its concentration
is high in fluoridated water and sodium fluoride tablets.
Fluoride Poisoning
Fluoride poisoning occurs when there is accidental or intentional
over consumption of fluoride in its myriad forms. Some of the symptoms of
fluoride overdose include weakness, vomiting, tremors, slow or irregular
heartbeat, shallow breathing, nausea, heart attack, headache, drooling,
diarrhea, convulsions, abnormal taste such as salty or soapy taste and
abdominal pain.Risks of ingesting fluoride includes dental and skeletal fluorosis,
hip and other bone fractures, reduced IQ and brain development in children, thyroid
diseases and chronic kidney diseases.
Treatment for fluoride overdose depends on the condition of
the patient. Symptoms of the patient are carefully observed along with the
blood pressure, breathing rate, temperature and pulse. Usually the stomach of
the patient is cleaned out via gastric lavage or medications are given to
induce emesis or vomiting. The patient may also receive milk and calcium.
Recovery is directly dependent on the amount of fluoride consumed and the time
taken to start treatment.
Opposition
Many American organizations have hotly debated the benefits
of fluoride and seek to discontinue its active usage in water, toothpaste and
other products for the good health of its citizens. They are backed by various
studies and research reports that prove fluoride causes harm to human health.
The handbook of Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products states
that fluoride is more poisonous than lead, slightly less poisonous than arsenic
and a cumulative poison accumulating in the bone as time passes by.
A communiqué sent to the members of the American Dental
Association (ADA) informs that fluoride isextremely dangerous for infants under
the age of one and prohibits the use of fluoridated water in baby food or
formula to prevent tooth damage.
Articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association
(AMA) have linked increase in hip fracture rates to consumption of fluoridated water.
A study by Procter and Gamble showed sizable and significant
increase in genetic damage with the use of even half the amount of fluoride
used in fluoridating public water supplies.
